Insights on Insights: an overview of the new SAP Lumira 2.0

Insights on Insights: an overview of the new SAP Lumira 2.0: Rod Stewart’s 1987 “some guys have all the luck” definitely applies to me. Since a few weeks, I have been using a prerelease of Lumira 2.0, and to end this review with my conclusion: good … very, very good!

The convergence of Lumira 1.3x and Design Studio was already announced last year. SAP’s simplification program also applies to analytics, and the decision to convergence the self-service Lumira component with the managed dash boarding capabilities of Design Studio, is as understandable as it is valuable. To obey Digital Transformation agility requirements, BI modal architectures that pin IT-centric platform delivery towards Line of Business responsiveness are a necessity. Enterprises are torn between running their business in a stable environment versus reacting quickly on changes in market dynamics. As such it made sense to converge Lumira and Design Studio and make the “bridge”: data discovery and managed dash boarding in one tool with consistent experience and capabilities for both IT as business users. Where business users now can personalize enterprise dash boards, IT and power users can promote business user visualizations into enterprise dashboards. Nice!!

The new product is named Lumira 2.0 and is expected to GA in July 2017. The new product has one combined server and two desktops, named respectively Designer and Discovery, and all fully (!) governed. The information consumer accesses via a browser.

Inherit each others strong points

There is lots to like as you can see in below video, but if I can take out two:

  • What basically happened in Lumira 2.0 is that Lumira and Design Studio inherit each others strong points. Where Lumira 1.3x didn’t have a live connection to SAP BW and Design Studio could, Lumira 2.0 now lets the user choose between a live (data stays in BW) or an off-line connection. The same applies for connecting to SAP HANA.

  • Interoperability: A story board with blended data created in Discovery is brought to Designer with a single-click to professionalize it into a enterprise dashboard. In other words: business users who create their necessary insights can have these promoted towards and enterprise dashboard in an extremely easy way.

Luckily Lumira 2.0 still has the even stunning as simple 4-way approach to get to an insight:

  1. connect & acquire

  2. enrich & prepare

  3. visualize & create a story board

  4. share

Below is a first overview of a beta of Lumira 2.0. As mentioned, Lumira 2.0 is expected to go GA as of July 2017.

Interoperability between SAP Lumira 2.0 Discovery and Designer

One of the key objectives for SAP when developing Lumira 2.0 was to ensure interoperability between end user data discovery and ICT professionalized dash boards. It applies to the BI Modal architectures. And did SAP succeed well! See below video how easy it is to bring a Discovery storyboard into Designer and quickly pimp it. Wonderful.

Live connectivity to SAP BW for Discovery and Designer

My personal favorite is the new live connectivity to SAP BW that applies to both the Discovery as the Designer component. Now all your SAP BW data is available for full data discovery and insights. Create your storyboard with a live connection in Discovery and easily professionalize in Designer. That’s the way to go!
